Podcast
Pharmacists in Wound Care

In this podcast, the moderator Martha Kelso, RN, LNC, HBOT, discusses what a PharmD is and how they should be more involved in the wound care community, especially considering how wounds and medications interact with each other, with Survam Patel, PharmD, and Josh Coons, PharmD of Smithville Pharmacy.

I’ve used compounded antibiotics for nearly a decade but it’s been an ongoing frustration to ensure that the compounded products are affordable since patients nearly always have to pay out of pocket for them. Smithville has worked closely with me to compound products that meet the unique needs of complex wound patients. I am excited about Smithville’s compounded topical products for conditions like atrophie blanche, calciphylaxis, and pyoderma gangrenosum. It is also possible to add topical anesthetics for these horribly painful and surprisingly common conditions.

I have used the wound care compounding service from Smithville Pharmacy on several patient's wounds. The ordering process is quick and easily started. With just a wound culture and description of the wound, Smithville Pharmacy sends out the compound quickly and for a very reasonable cost. My patients have been able to use it and the results are fantastic. The antibiotic selection helps keep the bacterial load low, and the wound care ingredients help with new collagen and granulation formation and ultimately closure.

My patients and I have been very happy with the service, products, and increased healing rate from the wound care service of Smithville Pharmacy.

Patients put their trust in healthcare professionals and should not have to face the trauma of repeated painful dressing changes. Healthcare professionals need to rise to the challenge of minimizing wound pain, selecting the appropriate wound care products, and having an understanding of the uses, indications, and contraindications of a wide range of products.

In this article, Dr. Survam Patel discusses emerging wound-related pain management trends, including current procedural and operative pain management best practices for wound providers.

Featured Case Study: Atrophie Blanche

Smithville Pharmacy shines in this article by utilizing its proprietary dosing algorithm to successfully treat chronic difficult to heal wounds such as atrophie blanche. "Over the years I had become frustrated with the challenges involved in ordering compounded treatments for wounds and the variability in pricing, since patients almost always have to pay out of pocket. I told Dr. Pena, the head pharmacist [of Smithville Pharmacy], that if they could help me with my list of “nemesis wounds,” they’d earn my enthusiastic support.

So far, we have had some success with atrophie blanche. They compounded topical Dapsone gel, to which we added topical aspirin. It is also possible to add topical anesthetic medication for this painful skin condition. " - Caroline Fife, MD
